The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause chaos to public transit.
