Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion offered a platform for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season proved no match even for a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
