White House Reveals Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Third Week
The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.
Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges
Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.
This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO responded to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.
Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.
This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
